RISE Travel Institute
RISE Travel Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a more just and equitable world through travel education. We equip travelers and tourism professionals with the knowledge, frameworks and lenses needed to better understand the impacts of travel and tourism, as well as their role in shaping a more regenerative future.
We envision a world where travel contributes to the well-being of host communities, protects natural ecosystems, and fosters greater understanding across cultures. Through educational programs, public resources, and community engagement, RISE helps learners explore the interconnected social, cultural, economic, ecological, and ethical dimensions of travel, fostering deeper understanding, critical reflection, and more thoughtful engagement. Our offerings include the award-winning Flagship Certificate Program in Sustainability and Anti-Oppression, the Carbon Literacy and Climate Justice (CLCJ) Workshop for tourism professionals, the RISE Traveler Pathway for travelers, place-based and topic-specific courses, and a wide range of free resources including a blog, a podcast, ebooks, toolkits, and webinars.
Beyond online learning, RISE convenes critical tourism conversations through conferences, documentary screenings, a book club, community events, and Experiential Journeys that connect theory with practice. Grounded in systems thinking and informed by decolonial principles, RISE works to reshape travel from an extractive industry into a force for equity, inclusion, justice, and environmental stewardship.
